The Two Types of Grasslands
Temperate
· Also called tall-grass grasslands
· As the name suggests, there is tall grass
· Wetter, more humid climate
· Mix of grasses and shrubs
· 10-20 inches of precipitation (most as snow)
· Warm/hot summers
· While most grasslands are infertile, some grasslands produce some of the most fertile soil in the world, because of this, much of the world’s temperate grasslands have been converted to farmland
Where they are found:
·North America: Prairies of central lowlands, high plains, Palouse Prairie of eastern Washington, California grasslands, and the desert grasslands of the Southwest

Savanna
· Dry grassland with shrubs and short trees
· Found between tropical rainforests and desert biomes
· Low precipitation (during “winter”), no forests
· Also known as low-grass grasslands or tropical grasslands
Where they are found:
· Found around equator and especially around tropical rainforests
